No more patients to watch a tree
grow
Remember
when you bought a new home and planted a sapling that you and your family so
excitedly pick out from the neighborhood nursery. Over the years you would
watch that sapling turn into a beautiful tree, and that tree became a
meaningful part of your family’s memories. Well, those days are gone; People
are spending thousands of dollars for mature trees to adorn their homes.
I remember
years ago, I was at a very beautiful Ranch style home in Rancho Santa Fe
California and the home was built around a very beautiful tree. I don’t
remember what kind of tree it was, but it was in the center of the home. This tree
was there before the home. Now people are buying the mature tree, having it
moved and planted and then building the home.
I was
reading an article in the Wall Street Journal http://on.wsj.com/1yhqmPj, about the
popularity of this type of behavior, in fact it seems as though a mature tree
at a home can be worth thousand when the home is sold. To tell the whole truth,
this type of behavior is only prevalent in the Luxury Home Real Estate Market.
Does this
say more about our instant gratification world we live in today, then it does
about making a good investment in our home.
In my Business of Property
Management in Orange County Ca. I see all kinds of great trees and I even sold
a home one time, because the buyers fell in love with the avocado tree in the
back yard. But aren’t we losing the the enjoyment of watching that sapling grow
into the majestic tree we would grow to love. I understand wanting everything
to happen “right now” but this seems to be cheating.
I know, that
using the word “cheating” gives the impression that the people who buy these
mature trees for their property are doing something wrong, but I use the word
“cheating”, because I thing we are cheating ourselves of the experience that
only time can give us. I know that in the scheme of things this is small potatoes,
but the real joys in life often come from small potatoes.
