Decorating your home, take
your time
As a man, I don’t put much
emphasis on decorations, but I do pay attention to space. Mixing and matching
colors and the correct style of furniture means nothing to me. Having things
clean and not cluttered is what I like to see, but I understand that the way a
home is decorated is important to many people, so I was reading some tips from
top decorators and I thought I would share some of those tips with you and fill
in some of my own thoughts:
Budgeting:
Making compromises is very
important when decoration a home. What you need to do is make a list of
everything you want, and then cut it down to what you really need and them
budget from that standpoint.
Accessorizing:
This is where I think people make their biggest
mistakes when decorating. Too many accessories means clutter and that is not a
good look. Less is more in most instances, so don’t go crazy on the pillows and
fluff, and remember, whatever you put on the shelf must be dusted.
Paint:
Painting is the easiest way to make a room look
clean, but a bad paint job can ruin the look of a home. Have fun with paint,
you can always change it, but make sure the doors and windows don’t stick.
Seating Arrangements:
I am terrible at seating arrangements, I sit
where I can and I love to lean on things, but if the seats are arranged in a
strange manner you can lose much of the useful space of a room.
Mirrors:
I have talked about mirrors in the past, I love
the use of mirrors, they can make a small room look much larger and brighter.
Quality:
Buy less things but buy quality, we all can see
the difference between the do it yourself furniture and a quality piece.
Quality can last for years.
Small Spaces;
Small spaces can be tricky. I’m going to give the quote from this
decorator:
"Small furniture in small rooms only emphasizes that they're small. A
large-scale piece gives the room oomph and adds dimension." —Ken Fulk
Like I said, very tricky
Stress:
Try to enjoy the decorating process and don’t let the stress get to
you, take your time and do one room at a time.
