Getting the house ready for the Trick or Treaters
Halloween is right around the corner and you should take
some precautions in getting your home ready. I am not talking about getting the
right decorations, although decorating your home for Halloween is fun and
should be encouraged, but I am talking about making sure the walkway is safe
for the kids.
Halloween is a fun night for children to dress up and prowl
the neighborhoods for candy. Sometimes the costumes that they wear are not very
good for walking or for seeing what is around them. Now the best thing of
course is to make sure the property is well lit, but that would take much of
the fun out of Halloween. Having a scary house does not go well with a well lit
house, so the next best thing to do is make sure the walkway that the children
will be using is clear of any hazards.
A couple of years ago, I realized that my walkway leading to
the door was not safe, because the tree next to the walkway had roots that
lifted up part of the cement that created an unnatural step that could be
dangerous. I put some work into the problem and removed the concrete and then
cut out the roots and put some very nice brick down. It made me happy, because
the brick looked very nice, and also the walkway was now safe for the children
to walk on.
Also try and clear any plants or shrubs that could get in
the way of the children. Remember, they all don’t come to the door single file,
many times they are all walking together especially when thing get busy.
Now I have notice over the years that less and less people
are giving out candy and they just shut their lights, but that is terrible. Get
into the spirit of the day and put a few scary decorations out for the children
and spend $20 on some candy and have fun. You may find that you meet some nice
people in your neighborhood, that you never knew existed. Halloween is the one
night of the year that people are actually walking around the neighborhoods and
it’s a great time for people to meet and talk with each other, I know that
actually talking to the people in your neighborhood can be much more
frightening than any spooky Halloween spirit.
