Home Depot and Loyalty
I am a huge fan of Home Depot, and for good reason. I can go
into a Home Depot and just walk around and look at new things and get Ideas.
With my back ground as a contractor my Home Depot appeal, is more than
just a hobby and even as A Real Estate Broker, I use Home Depot all the time,
but the one thing that I love, is the loyalty that Home Depot has to their
customers.
As a contractor I have spent much of my money on tools in
years past and I have very fond memories of taking a well used tool that had
stopped working back to Home Depot. They would take the used tool back and give
me a brand new one to replace it. Now things are not that easy today, but for
me, those days of their loyalty to me created my loyalty to them.
About 6 months ago I bought a Malibu LED patio spot light. A week
ago it stopped working, so I tried to figure out how to replace the bulb. I
could not and I did not realize you don’t replace the bulb, they are supposed to
last many years. I took it to Home Depot with no box, no receipt and asked the
man in the electrical department to help me. He was a little hesitant when I
asked for a replacement light and I understood that, but I asked him to call
the manager. He explained the situation to the manager and without even talking
to me the manager gave his approval for the replacement of the light. The man
working in the electrical department seemed surprised at the manager’s
decision, but I was not. I expected it and before I left the store with my new
replacement light, I spent another $120.00 on a new fountain for my yard.
Situations like this are common place at Home Depot and I
understand that other stores also treat their customers the same way, but Home Depot has been treating me with this type of care for many years and I will
continue to spend my money in their stores.
The funny thing is that as I was looking
at the fountain to buy I had a couple of questions about the fountain so I
sought a person in the garden department. I ran into a Home Depot employee who
was talking to a man, but once he saw that I was waiting to talk to him both of
the men started over towards me to find out what my question was. The other man
was a vendor from Kellogg soil products and he was also very helpful and I
ended up not only buying the fountain, but I bought the Kellogg potting soil.
So even the vendors who service Home Depot are very willing to help.
Loyalty to me is a very important part of my life. I have
never changed my cell phone company, although the company has changed many
times and I rarely feel that Verizon is loyal to me. I have been with Direct TV
for years but again, I don’t have the loyalty feeling. I use many other stores
and have been treated very well, but to me Home Depot is a big box store that
acts more like a Mom and Pop. I know not everyone will agree with me and that’s
OK, but I wish all businesses would be loyal to their customers and I am going
to work very hard to create loyalty with my customers as well.
