Is History losing it's true meaning
In Southern California we get very little rain, and anyone
who listens to the news around the country knows we have been in a drought. Now
a drought in So Cal is no stranger, in fact the pattern goes and this has been
the case for as long as I can remember and I am a native Californian, is we
have a drought, we get fires with the Santa Ana winds, we get Rain and Mud
Slides. I was watching the news and they were interviewing a resident in an
area that was having mud slides and he said, “he has never seen it this bad”,
well he must be a new comer to the area.
The problem with saying anything is the worst ever, or the
best ever, is that “ever” is a subjective timetable. “Ever” is only as
good as our own memory and when we are going through anything that is good, or
bad we only remember the event we are in. It is very difficult to compare
subjective events, part of the problem is that as human beings we live in the
moment.
I have noticed lately that everything is said to be “Historic”
no matter what happens the people who are involved tell us it is historic. The
key is, that it is always the people involved in an event who are letting us know it is historic. There
is a problem with that, again for something to be historic it must be “well
known or important in History”, so something that happens now, by definition
cannot be historic, it may be Historic someday.
It seems that more and more
people want to be relevant and want to try and cement their place in history, unfortunately
for them, very few things that happen now will ever be Historic.
In my business of Property Management in Orange County Ca.
The words “EVER” and “HISTORY” are relevant to me when I am evaluating and
dealing with Tenants.
"HISTORY" tells me that there is an "EVER" present danger, when a Tenant deviates from their "HISTORIC" patterns, a problem may be
on the horizon.
For example, I have Tenants in a household that are related
and for months their rent has been paid by one person with one check, on time.
That has been their History, but the last pay period I received ½ of the rent
from the person who has been paying and a late check from the other Tenant for
the other half. This is a break in their historic pattern and to me is a red
flag. In this case, before this change
in pattern I would have said, these Tenants are some of the best Tenants I have
“EVER” had, but since their sudden change in their "HISTORIC" patterns that may no longer be the case and that is the danger
of using the terms “HISTORIC and EVER”. These two terms represent time that is for the most part longer then
our life spans. And when it comes to people, very few will ever be historic,
but we are all historic in our own minds
