Do Lower Gas Prices put you in a
better mood?
I really enjoy
driving by the gas station not too far from my home and almost on a daily basis;
I see the price of gas going down. Yesterday, December 16, the price was $2.49.
In the title, I ask if lower gas prices
put you in a better mood and to answer my own question, for me the answer is a
resounding “YES”. But does it make me want to go out and buy other stuff, the
answer is “NO”.
When I hear
that the price of gas being lower should help other parts of the economy, by
letting people put the money that would normally be spent at the pump, be spent
on other things, That is a theory that I am not sure will pan out. Even though
gas is cheaper than it has been for the last few years, other things seem to
be, at least in my own experience more expensive. So, yes lower gas prices are great,
it does not give me an incentive to go out and spend money on other things.
The other thing
I hear is that while lower gas prices are great for the short run, it will be
costly in the long run. That sounds like investors worried about their pocket
books and not worried about the price at the pump, in fact many of those who
bemoan the lower gas price as a long term problem, live in a place that they don’t
need to drive.
In my
business of Property Management in Orange County Ca. I drive all the time, from
property to property and the lower gas prices do make a difference to me. Maybe just seeing the sign outside the gas
station change daily is enough to make us feel better and put us in a better
mood, but in the back of my mind I know, especially in my State of California
the price will be going back up, in fact at the 1st of the year
prices in California will surely be going up due to new environmental laws.
So let’s
enjoy these lower prices for the time being and make sure we keep a full tank,
because as soon as the price of a barrel of oil start to go up, you will start
to see those signs outside the gas stations go up.
