Is open Beam for you?
I really love an open beam
ceiling, and there are many styles that catch my eye. Most people think that an
open beam ceiling is only in a ranch style home, and believe me the Ranch home
with an open beam ceiling is one of my favorite looks, but there are the more
modern style homes that are also using the open beam ceiling and they also look
great.
The first question is why
open beam? I understand the people who are skeptical of the open beam style and
I also understand that it is not for everyone, but when you want to have a
ceiling that is more than just plaster and paint and you really want some
definition on your ceiling then the open beam may be something you would like.
The Ranch style home is
one that is most popular with the open beam style; the western motif seems to
go hand and hand with the beautiful large beams and the natural color of the
wood. Some people like the rough lumber look, I really like the large lumber
with oversize hardware, it makes it seem like the wood is carrying a large load.
The more modern home
sometimes uses the open beam below the painted plaster or drywall ceiling and
when done right, it can look great.
With an open beam ceiling,
you can also have sky lights in between the beams to let in the natural light. And
also there are different types of lighting that can be hung from the large beams;
I really like hanging ceiling fans from the beams.
I also like the look of
the open “Glulam “beam. A glulam beam is a manufactured beam that used
different cuts of wood that are laminated together. The reason for using a
glulam beam is that they can make very large beans to your specific engineered plans. Another thing about the glulam beam is that they really look hardy and make you feel
as though you are walking through an 1850 Gold Rush mill. Again it’s a matter
of taste.
Whatever your taste is,
there is a style that you might like. If you get a chance to look at different
styles of open beam ceilings, you may find yourself also falling in love with
the concept of the open beam ceiling.
