Twenty Four, Seven
I hear all the time about people who just turn off and get
lost for a while. Sometimes they forget to tell people what their plans are and
the police actually have to get involved looking for a missing person, but in reality,
they just are tired of being available Twenty Four, Seven.
We all love our gadgets and we keep waiting for the next one
to come along, but are we living in the 1984 reality. Everyone knows where we
are, who we are with, and what we are doing and if they can’t get hold of us
right away, they think that some harm has come to us. I remember the day when
you only answered the phone, when you were home, and the phones were indestructible.
Then the answering machine became popular and when we got home we looked for
the blinking light to see if someone wanted us. Now, we can’t get away from
someone wanting us.
I carry my phone in my pocket and it never stops making some
kind of noise. A few months ago, it made a sound I had never heard. The sound
was telling me there was an Amber alert, letting me know that a child was
missing. I think it was around 10 PM and I thought it was a great idea for that
information to come over my phone. Finally a great use of this gadget, but the
next day, that’s all I heard on the radio was how everyone was upset that they
were disturbed by the noise that they did not recognize.
I was amazed at the reaction and all the wireless companies
that participated in the alert had to let everyone know how to disable the
alert if they wanted to. Finally a good
use for these devices and people want to disable the function. Amazing!
In my business of Property Management in Anaheim Ca. I do make use of the Gadgets and I always
answer my phone unless I am talking to someone or on the other line. I never
tell the person I am talking to, that I have to take the other call, that is one
of the rudest things and when people do that to me, I will not take their call
back, at least for a while. These gadgets are making us a very self absorbed
people and we are often forgetting what is important.
Of course these Gadgets that we use today, have great uses
and I am not advocating we go back to the old days, but once in a while and I admit
the feeling comes more and more, I would like to get out of the Twenty Four
Seven reality of life and I wish I could just come home and look for the blinking
light.
