Don’t put a mask on
When I was in Italy, one of my favorite souvenirs I brought
back with me were the beautiful masks I bought in Venice representing the
Carnival of Venice. The Carnival ends with start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. The masks
impressed me because of the creativity and the variety.
While the masks in Italy are great, wearing a mask in your
life is not a good idea. So much of our lives seem to be hidden behind virtual
masks and the internet allows us to do this easier than ever before. I have to admit,
I do much of my shopping on line to avoid going out into the crowds of people
and it is also easier to just get on the computer and order what I want without
any interaction at all. And I also admit that I don’t go into the Gym anymore,
I work out at home so again I am avoiding any human interaction. It’s not that
I want to avoid people. I like to interact with people, but life is so busy and
complicated sometimes that it is so much easier to just put on the mask and
avoid people.
In my Business of Property Management in Anaheim Ca. I deal
with people all the time, but much of it on the phone and when the day ends,
sometimes I think back on the day and realize that I never actually met anyone
in person. I talked to people, I e-mailed people, but I did not really meet
anyone and this is not an uncommon occurrence. When I was younger, every day I
was meeting new people and interacting with people all the time. Of course the
internet was not here at the time and I was not as busy as I am now but what those
masks from Italy remind me of is that it is so much easier to put the mask on
in life and not be seen in public and to conduct our lives behind closed doors.
It will take some effort to remove the mask and once again
get out from behind the doors and get back to meeting people in person, but if
the mask is never removed then you will find yourself in a self imposed exile
from life and the longer you remain behind the mask the harder it will be to
remove it.
