Small can work
I hear all the time, that my kitchen is too small, or my
bathroom is too small, or pick a room is too small, but I say, “Not so fast”
Small can work and it is all in the way you use it.
Now everyone likes more room, but when you are in a situation
that you have no choice but to deal with small, you need to think big!
Now you
may say that thinking big makes no sense when it comes to a small room, but
what I mean by thinking big is that I want you to think big is bad.
The biggest mistake that people make when they have a small space
is they use large items to decorate their space. I have used this example
before, but I had a friend that had a very small home and his living room was very
small, He had a huge TV that was so big and the room was so small, you could
not look at it without it being blurred because you could not get far enough
away to make it work. When he went to sell the property, the first thing I told
him was to get rid of the TV, because it made the room look smaller then what it
really was.
When dealing with small space, you need to use small things
to decorate in order not to overwhelm the space you have... When you have a
small kitchen you need to use smaller appliances and smaller cabinets.
For a bathroom, you use thinner cabinets that are taller and
use all the space above to leave more room below.
The same goes for bedrooms that are small, get smaller
furniture and use your closets in an organized fashion, because clutter is the
enemy of small spaces.
Color is also a very big mistake people make when dealing
with space, the darker the color the smaller things will look, if you have a
small room think light colors and you will see a huge difference in the look
of the room.
I said at the beginning that “small can work” and it can,
you just need to accentuate small with small and use your space wisely.
In my
business of Property Management in Orange County California, I always tell
people that the square footage of a home is not what is important, it is how
the rooms are designed that is important and you need to keep that in mind when
looking at homes. Don’t get caught up in the square footage craze, use common
sense.
