Why you should never say things everyone knows is a lie
In my business of Property Management in Orange County Ca. I
understand how important credibility is and I never say things that people know
are not true. I often say that I talk way too much and would never remember
what I was saying if I was telling falsehoods. When you tell people something
that is a lie and it is such an obvious lie that you look stupid, you will
never be believed again.
I was watching a basketball game between Cleveland and
Chicago and the day before, Cleveland fired their coach even though they are in
first place, a shocking move. I mean, what is a coach expected to do if first
place is not good enough. They talked to the General Manager during the game
and he gave some silly reason but the big lie was that they never talked to
Lebron James before the firing. No one believes that. They don’t even change
the brand of toilet paper in the arena without Lebrons approval. This General
Manger looked so silly and has no credibility, the only thing that surprised
me, was the lack of questioning by the reporter who was doing the interview. To
have this guy lie to your face and not call him out on it was weak at best and
in listening to the commentators that were working the game, who by the way are
both former coaches, I also thought their response was weak.
All of us get deceived all the time and it becomes so easy
to detect someone who is not telling the truth. Most people are not good at
deceiving and unless we want to be deceived, we normally will be able to
uncover a deceiver.
The Cleveland General Manager, who is protecting his super
star player by taking the responsibility for the coach being fired, will be
fired himself if the team falls from the top. The one thing about lies,
eventually the person who tells the lie will be exposed and will pay the price.
In business, when people lose faith in you, it becomes difficult, if not
impossible to get your reputation back. It reminds me of a Tenant who always
has an excuse for being late with the rent, once the reputation of that Tenant
is damaged, as a Property Manager; I never take any of their excuses seriously
again.
I find it much better to tell the truth, even if the truth
may not be a comfortable thing. In the Cleveland situation, the General Manger
should have said nothing, instead of telling an obvious lie. For me, the truth
is how I run my business, even if some people really don’t want to hear it.
