Forget the Driverless car; I still am looking to the “Jetsons”
I keep hearing the push of the driverless car, by the car manufactures,
Google, Tesla and Others. In fact Ford said they will have one on the market
without a steering wheel in 2021. Who cares, I like to drive and I am sure not
going to put my confidence into a computer run car. My dishwasher has a computer
and it always breaks down. What happened to the “Jetsons” car, you know the one
that flies?
The Jetsons
The Jetsons is an
American animated sitcom produced by Hanna-Barbera, originally airing in
primetime from September 23, 1962. 1962 is the year I was born and I have been
waiting for the flying car ever since, plus Jane the wife was hot!
What
happened to the futuristic life that we all were supposed to be living? Sure we
have these computers that tell us everything we need to know, and 7 years after
the sitcom was aired, we landed on the moon, but we seemed to have put the
space age on the back burner and went for the computer age. At least give us the jet packs.
Smart Home
Are we capable of Living in a “Jetsons” style
home? The answer to that is Yes! We have vacuuming robots, not as cool as “Rosie”
the Jetsons humanoid robot, that speaks. We have video chat just like my best girl
Jane was doing with her friend, George helping his son with his homework on a
screen and remote everything. In fact we have the technology, to have a very “Jetsons”
type home. That home right now would be very expensive and is not common, but
just like the flat screen TV that was not affordable a few years ago; the smart
home technology will continue to become more cost effective and wider spread.
A smart or connected home is one that is controlled
by a device like a smart phone and we have much of that now. You can’t turn on
the TV or radio without hearing about a garage door being closed from a
distance with a smart phone, or the “Ring” doorbell, where you can see who is
at your door from wherever you are. The technology for the smart home is here
and will be common by 2020.
The Smart home for Landlords
How will the Smart home affect investment
property owners? The technology can allow Landlords to monitor the home from
afar and make sure that things like the air filters in the A/C or Heater is
clean and you will also be able to monitor Tenant activity in the home and that
may not be good for Tenant privacy. A Landlord could monitor Electricity use, Temperature
and climate control and overall activity in the home. This information can let
the Landlord know if the Tenant occupancy is changing by the use of utilities.
While some of this monitoring may be useful, there will be a fine line that a
Landlord will need to walk so not to infringe on the Tenants quality of life
and privacy.
The most important thing is will we ever get
the flying car? Unfortunately, I fear not in my lifetime. I was able to see man
land on the moon, but now the only thing I am promised is a car that can drive itself.
Big Deal, I will drive myself thank you. When I compare the computer age to the space age, the space age looks like it would be much more fun.
