Realtors should leave the Hero business to others
We hear the term hero all the
time; it seems as though everyone is a hero or wants to be a hero. Now there
are many different kinds of hero’s. The Solder fighting for our country, the
Police or Fireman who puts themselves in harm’s way to help others, or the
citizen who gets involved where others just walk away. Then we all have our
personal hero’s, our Parents who selflessly do without, so their children can
have what they need, a Doctor who makes the lives of their patients better, or
a Teacher who goes out of their way to make sure their students get the
education they need. These hero’s are great people who change the lives of
others. But in some ways, trying to be a hero can do more harm than good.

Be honest no matter the cost
I have been in the Real Estate
business for many years and I have seen some crazy things that Realtor's and
owners of properties do. One of the biggest issues that I have seen is a
Realtor trying to be a hero for their clients. What I mean by that is very
simple. The Real Estate business is very competitive and in my business of Property Management in Orange County Ca. I understand dealing with clients
can be a daunting task. Home Owners want their Realtor's to perform magic in
order to get all that they want and the Realtor's want to convince their
clients that they can make things happen; even though they know what they are
saying to their clients may not be possible. They want their clients to think
about them as their Real Estate hero’s. But more times than not, they go from
hero to bum very quickly. Being honest with a client may lose a Realtor a
listing or a buyer and that is a big fear for Realtor's. Realtor's understand
that if they don’t say what the potential client wants them to say, someone
else will and those other Realtor's will be the hero of the day for the
property owners.
Most property owners have certain
ideas in their head that a Realtor cannot change until reality sets in. I have
sat in the living room with many potential clients and have heard them tell me
about their home and why it is the best house in the world and they want
everything. How, as a Realtor do you tell people they are wrong and then expect
them to give you their business? It is much easier to tell them they are right
and hope with time they will come to their senses. That is not a bad strategy,
as long as a Realtor does not take the hero role too far. As long as a Realtor
understands the situation they are in, and they don’t start acting the hero
role, they have a chance to have a successful transaction and make some money
in the end, but if they start believing that they can be the hero, the odds of
them completing a deal becomes remote at best. Always remember the service you promise to provide
After a while a Home owner will come
to their senses, but many times it will be the next Realtor that makes the deal
and the real hero to the home owner is not the one that tells them what they
want to hear, but the one who actually sells their home.
