Why
do we love the Super Bowl?
Today everything will take a pause
for the Super Bowl. In the United States and in many countries around the world, the focus will be in
Houston, where the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons will try to
become the best Team in Football. But why the interest?
Reasons not to care
There are so many reasons why we
should not care about the game today. The NFL is not an organization that takes
care of its own. Many of the players in the past have been horribly injured and
have had to sue to get some help. With the amount of money that this game has,
they should take care of these players without being dragged into court.
If you
are a church and want to have a super bowl bingo party to raise some money, you
will have a good chance of being sued by the NFL for using the two words. “SUPER
BOWL”.
If you are not an NFL Sponsor you need to use the words “BIG GAME”.
Players who disrespect the Flag and halftime
shows that may make a political statement. I can go on and on.
The Worst Commissioner in Sports
It all
comes down to Commissioner Roger Goodell. He, in my opinion is one of the worst commissioners
in professional sports. Yes he makes a lot of money for the owners, but is it
really him. This is a guy who dragged the best player, Tom Brady in and out of
court for over a year and long after anyone cared about air in the football. He
is an inarticulate spokesman for the league and he has handled the concussion
issue horribly. This man makes in the area of $40 million per year and he seems
to stumble his way through the day.
We Still Watch
Al that being said, we still watch,
myself included, but that goes back to the question, “Why do we watch”?
Reasons to watch
Everyone has different reasons.
Some, like myself, love the game of football and as much as I dislike many of
the changes that the sport has gone through, it is still the most exciting game
to watch on TV than any other. Football is a great TV sport. One thing the NFL
does better than any other sport is give the TV viewer a much better experience
then if you actually go to the game.
Another reason and I also put
myself in this category, the food. I love all the football food that I will eat
today. Having an excuse to eat an excessive amount is also a great reason to
love the Super Bowl.
Of course there are the
commercials. I personally have no interest in this part of the Super Bowl, but
I know many people that do.
The half time show, I will be doing
many other things during half time but one of them will not be watching the
show.
The parties: I know many people who
are having Super Bowl parties and people will be at those parties who have not
watched one game all year.
The player stories: will Tom Brady
win his 5th Super Bowl? How will Roger Goodell handle having to hand
the Trophy to the Patriots after he suspended Tom Brady for the first four
games of the season?
Will the Atlanta Falcons win their
first Super Bowl? What will Bill Belichick say in the post game interview?
How about the Gamblers? Will the Patriots
cover the point spread? How many total points will be scored? How many
touchdowns will be scored? Will there be a Safety? And so on.
Who will be the MVP of the game?
Who will be the hero?
There are so many different reasons
why people watch the Super Bowl and hundreds of millions of us will
watch today. But whatever the reason, I hope it is a great game.
Enjoy
